Getting ansy, I took my images and photoshopped them on a shirt. While it's not guaranteed that it'll look exactly like this, it's definitely the look I hope to achieve. I'll be finishing the poster card graphics soon.

I spent Sunday drawing and cleaning my place. I'm hoping to have my art space set up by the end of the week. It's going to be ready for painting, printing, photo sorting, framing, home brewing, and... with time, whatever else I come up with! Sewing, candle making, and nursing plant life are also on my list. Very exciting stuff. So anyway.. Sunday gave me this pile of line drawings to run through Photoshop, and some good direction for where I want to take my prints. I'm leaning towards the one of the girl dancing, which I translated from the included photo. I want to incorporate the words "gamble everything for love", an excerpt from a poem by Rumi. I also quite like the type and curves on the "True I'm Livin" piece.

For one of my designs, I went to the well and figured that I'd do a girl with type in her hair.
The sketch always starts off pretty rough, but after looking at it, I decided that I'd try to keep that gritty look.
The picture above is actually the second version. In this version, the line strokes were a little more deliberate and I toned down the rendering.

So now I'm on the type portion. I think I'm pretty close to inking this, but there are still some here and there's that I'm not too thrilled about.

Thoughts on packaging (pt 2)

After getting some feedback, I thought about other possible box shapes. Actually, I only thought of two, a pentagon and hexagon, and conceptualized the latter. The idea is to let the consumer ultimately decide their arrangement. I also revisited the rectangle idea - easiest to probably produce - and applied the same arrangement concept. Enjoy!

Thoughts on packaging

First, there's nothing major about this idea (not yet rather), it's moreso to examine the benefits of packaging our screened products in a box versus a bag.

Part 1 - flexibility. It feels like there's a certain 'finality' to packaging items in a bag. While it's cool to present something that has had minimal amount of handling, once the bag is sealed, there's not much more you can do with it. To do blind packaging with items, we assume that the consumer will want the size shirt and/or color that's being offered.

Part 2 - long term. If we spend the time to do some nice screened graphics for the bag label, will it be a lost cause if the consumer doesn't or can't keep it?

Anyways, here's the small idea that I've come up with.

Lessons In Screen Printing (part 2)

As mentioned, we had a screen printing part last Saturday at the Mission Multicultural Center. Like everyone else, I also constructed my own poster featuring the logo and mission statement. Being crunched for time, I opted to do mine analog - pencil, pen, and paper. Here's the OG design:

I also experimented with printing over everyone else's posters (which now is in the possession of k, g, or m, due to sharing with the entire creative umbrella, so I don't have them for photos) and a Phish one I found:

I really enjoyed the entire process and can't wait to start screening on other things. Peace.

Lessons in Screen Printing

On Saturday we took a screen printing class at Mission Cultural Center to get better acquainted with the screen printing process. To take the class, all you need is $12.00, a transparency of your design, inks and paper/fabric. Since this was simply a learning day we each designed an 8.5 x 11 poster with our logo and mission statement. We could design it any way we want, just as long as it had the logo and mission statement. This gave us the opportunity to see each others different styles and approaches to design. I was pretty excited and couldn't wait to begin.

So here's my original design:

As you can see, you can barely make out the bottom half. And the messy margins were actually done on purpose, but looking at it now, I would have rather had it taped off completely. Maybe it wouldn't have looked so bad with the messy margins? Needless to say, I was completely disappointed with how my design turned out.

Though it was a bummer, it didn't stop me from playing around with mixing colors.

After some of my pink ones were semi dried, we experimented with layering each others screens.

It turns out mine didn't look too bad as a background. With just a little work on registration, these could be pushed a little further (unfortunately the screens have probably been completely cleaned off of the designs.)

So what went wrong? Well a combination of things:
• I should have probably used a bold font for my text
• Mark mentioned that the screen wasn't fine enough and that it might have been exposed to long
• The instructor thinks it might have been the emulsion (he's had issues with it) and that something may have went wrong with the rinsing process.

Who know for sure? But whatever case, it's all part of the process and all I can do is go back and try again.

Biz Cards Part 2 + Letterhead: Stage 1

Here are some designs I came up with for our business cards. I wanted to incorporate the words "explore, kindle, grow, make" into our business cards for two reasons: one, it's part of our mission statement and two, EKGM stands for more than just the first letters of names.

As you can see on the upper right card, I also played around with throwing our individual animal into the mix just for fun.

For our letterhead, I played around with using graph paper. I wanted to use graph paper because it's different and none traditional, and because it would exemplify the our craftiness as a collective.

I'm really excited about the direction this is all going and can't wait to explore this further.

Here are some of my ideas for business cards. The cluster on the left was inspired by the curvature that is a repeating characteristic of the logo itself. The various color iterations were primarily a means to explore this card further, but could also act as a way to differentiate the various holders of the card (each one of us would get a variation).

Mission Cultural Center

I visited MCC yesterday and I was completely blown away. The building itself is bright and beautiful, and what goes on inside is even more so. There was a Latin American Folkloric Dance class going on during my visit. It was loud and lively with traditional music and a room full of the most adorable kids (no older than 4 or 5 yrs) following the instructors moves (and really well at that). I met with the head of Mission Grafica (their screen printing facility), Calixto, although I could only speak with him for a few seconds as he was mid session with after school kids. He said to come back at 6 to learn more about the program. I had class and couldn't make it back.

My impression is that MCC is more a service to the community than anything else. It's a place where kids can come to play, and be safe, and be immersed in traditional arts. It's not merely a facility that has equipment we can use. I think if we were to go in and take a few classes, get involved, and just be respectful and genuine, that we'd be able to get stuff done here. The room is large and clean, the instructor highly proficient, and the finished prints are breathtaking.

There's an opening tonight, Friday 2/27 at 6pm, where finished works from the various departments will be displaying and selling students work. I'm going to try to make it. You guys should come too if you can. Additionally, they have volunteering opportunities which may help us foster some good and useful relationships with the people here.

In this third go-around, I explored some new ideas, but ultimately drifted back to the curvy iteration.
